Derrick Rose may have received a few boos in his return to the United Center Friday night, but he’ll still always be that kid from Chicago.
Derrick Rose caught my eye with his athleticism and quickness during his junior and senior years at Simeon High School where he won the state championship both years.
After spending a year at Memphis, he was drafted with the 1st overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft to the Chicago Bulls, and I’m sure shouts of, “Pooh is coming home!” resonated throughout Chicago.
The guy who was drafted to his hometown team, the guy who has Englewood tatted on his forearm, the guy who was the league’s youngest MVP, Derrick Rose, is no longer a Bull but he didn’t leaving Chicago behind. He took a piece of Chicago with him to New York by going back to his high school number which he wore in honor of Ben Wilson. 25.
Remember the kid who was the third player in Bulls franchise history to win Rookie of the Year? He’s from Chicago.
Remember the kid who famously dunked on Goran Dragic? He’s from Chicago.
Remember the kid who brought everybody’s attention back to the Chicago Bulls for the first time since the end of the Jordan era? He’s from Chicago, and his name is Derrick Rose.
Tupac Shakur once spoke of a rose growing from concrete, well this Rose is about to grow in a place called Madison Square Garden, and I’m sure he’ll be just fine. Wanna know why?
Because you can take him out of Chicago, but you can’t take the Chicago out of him.
