Damian Lillard has come out the gates blazing (pun intended) so far this season. Can the Weber State alumni guard become MVP this season?
If you’re looking for a player in the league that plays with a chip on his shoulder every game, look no further than Damian Lillard. Dame is definitely looking like a legitimate MVP candidate, averaging 30.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game just 11 games into the season. He has definitely elevated his offensive game to a new level(insert ASAP Ferg voice here). The past 4 seasons, Lillard has made a name for himself in NBA as a 3-point shooter, but this season, he’s added the ability to not only get to the rim more, but finish through contact all while generating more trips to the free throw line.
Lillard is ranked 5th in the league with 10 free throw attempts per game while shooting 91% from the stripe. Also, he’s shooting 55.9% from the field, and 38.8% which has him on track to be a member of the 50/40/90 club.
It’s no longer a matter of if Damian Lillard is capable of reaching the next step on the superstar ladder but whether or not this level of play is sustainable. Steve Kerr chose Lillard as this season’s MVP, and from the looks of things right now, the NBA’s highest individual award may end up being given to Lillard if he keeps dropping dimes.
