In an off-season that featured some very interesting characters such as “China Klay”, “Singing Westbrook”, “Smiling Kahwi”, and “Workout Lebron”, one star shined the brightest of them all during the summer. Two words: “Hoodie Melo”, the man, the myth, the legend. Carmelo Anthony has not only put in the work this summer, but has also inspired many of his peers to work on their craft and play pick-up at open gyms across the country.
Although Carmelo has worked as hard as ever to be in peak physical shape, it will take more than that to get the Knicks back on track and into the playoff race. So what is next for Carmelo Anthony and the New York Knicks? Will “Hoodie Melo” put the team on his back throughout the season? Will Porzingis and Melo lead the Knicks to a Cinderella Season? Or will Knicks management finally pull the trigger and send Carmelo to one of the rumored destinations that Anthony’s camp released?
Carmelo’s ideal situation would be to wait as close to the trade deadline as possible, yet it all depends on the performance of the New York Knicks. If the Knicks happen to be a top 5-6 team in the Eastern Conference by All-Star Break, Anthony will finish out the season in N.Y.
On the other hand, if the Knicks are on the opposite side of the spectrum and bottom barreling, the Knicks and Anthony would have no choice but to part ways at the deadline. The Knicks would prepare for a rebuild by acquiring draft picks and players, focusing their attention to their International youth such as Kristaps Porzingis and Frank Ntilikina.
The Knicks would also need to find a suitor for Carmelo as he is under contract until 2019. During the busy off-season, Anthony was rumored to head to Houston, Cleveland, or Portland. All three rumored destinations would be beneficial to Carmelo and his needs of not only reaching the playoffs, but to compete for that ever so satisfying championship.
With Houston, joining a backcourt of MVP runner-ups in Chris Paul and James Harden can open up and simplify Melo’s game. Anthony can now play more of a stretch game, which he can catch and shoot from three point land. Who wouldn’t want to swing the ball to a wide open Carmelo? By joining Cleveland, Carmelo can now play alongside LeBron James, who can take Carmelo’s game to the next level and give the Cavaliers another great scorer to compete with the likes of Golden State punch for punch. If Carmelo goes to Portland (least likely of the three), he would be the veteran presence and scorer the Blazers need to take pressure off of Lillard and McCollum.
With all this being said, what is the perfect situation for Carmelo Anthony? What do you think is next for Melo?
